Inflatable Kayak FAQ’s
June 24, 2009 by IK World
Are inflatable kayaks safe and stable?
Absolutely! Inflatable kayaks are actually known to be the safest and most stable boats in the world. They never used to be, but now with the technology used and the innovative designs that allow for multiple chambers in the tube-set should one get punctured, they have an extremely high reputation for safety. In fact inflatable boats are essentially the standard for use by the military, coast guard and other search and rescue agencies around the world.
Should I repair my inflatable kayak myself?
That depends on the size of your puncture. For a small puncture – the size of a pinhole – simply applying some waterproof glue could solve the problem. For larger punctures a patch can be applied by using the repair kit that came with your inflatable kayak. However if you feel you have done a mediocre job, or if your leak is much larger, then contact the company that makes your inflatable and see if you are covered by their warranty. If not, take your kayak to any inflatable boat dealer for a professional repair. Having it done properly will preserve the life of your kayak.
Where do I get my inflatable kayak repaired?
Contact the manufacturer of your kayak to see if they will do it or else take it to any inflatable kayak dealer.
How do I find a leak in my inflatable kayak?
Prepare a soapy water mixture and spray it all over your inflatable kayak while it is inflated. Where there is a leak the soapy water will bubble and hiss.
How big of an inflatable kayak should I get?
This will depend on what you want to use it for. For example, will you be kayaking mostly on whitewater or flat water? Do you want to paddle alone or with a partner? Do you have kids to bring with you or a dog? Will you be camping or needing to bring lots of gear? Will you be fishing? How much money do you want to spend on the kayak? All of these questions need to be answered before you decide on the size of your inflatable kayak. Once you have your criteria, read the reviews and find the right kayak for your needs.
What kind of fabric are inflatable kayaks made with?
In the past, all inflatable were made with rubber materials (neoprene/hypalon). Today it is possible to make inflatables out of strong plastic materials called PVC. Many dealers are coming up with their own lighter weight but super rugged materials that are PVC-free and better for the environment as well as making the kayak much lighter to carry. Each type of fabric requires different material and glue for repairs so be sure to read your owners manual carefully.
Where do I get parts for my used inflatable kayak?
Find the brand name somewhere on the kayak. Every kayak will at least have a logo on it. Look up the brand on the internet and find out if there are any dealers in your area. If not, you can always buy parts online.
