What to Do When You Have to Poo?
August 23, 2009 by IK World
What? It’s a valid question. I drink a lot of water and consequently am always bathroom conscious when kayaking. Be it #1 or #2, sometimes you just have to go.
Being out on the water with no bathrooms in sight can be a little disconcerting and definitely something to think about. If you are simply out for a kayaking day-trip the best thing to do of course is be sure to go at least once right before you hop into your kayak. Depending on where you are, often there is at least an outhouse close by. From there beware of your time frame and if you have any accessible stops (i.e. wooded areas to do your business). If there are no accessible stops then you may not want to venture too far from your starting point.
If you plan on being out in your kayak for hours and hours with no stops then you might want to consider bringing along a waste bag. Many outdoor stores will carry human disposable waste bags
that have a special powder inside to control odor. Yes I know… gross. However human poo-lutants should not be going in the water or in highly populated areas for a number of health and safety reasons of which I believe are fairly obvious. Just one quick tip though… don’t forget to bring toilet paper.
Keep bathroom breaks in mind when planning a kayaking trip, whether it is a short or long excursion. Check out the area before hand and know what you are dealing with. Most importantly though – do not eat beans the night before you go and if you have to use a waste bag while in the kayak lets just hope you are paddling solo.
