More About the Sea Eagle 420X:

Sea Eagle 340X Deluxe PackageThe Sea Eagle 420x is the family sized model of their explorer kayaks. This is their largest size and is over a foot longer than the Sea Eagle 380x, almost 6 pounds heavier and can carry an extra hundred pounds. This is a great size if you plan on kayaking with kids, dogs, tons of gear and generally just want the convenience of a bigger kayak for lake kayaking and fishing. It is extremely stable and rugged and will get you just about anywhere. This inflatable kayak is ideal for extended camping trips, long wilderness adventures, fishing or hunting and recreational kayaking. It is still easily portable on an airplane yet can carry a huge load of gear. This boat is big, tough and lots of fun.

Recommendations for Sea Eagle Explorer Kayaks

If you decide one of the Sea Eagle explorer kayaks are the right fit for you I would highly recommend getting the tall back seats that come with the Pro Kayak  Package as well as the better paddles. The tall back seats are super comfortable and especially handy with the largest version… the 420x. They are well worth the little bit of extra money as you will find that they will allow you to stay out on the water a lot longer without the aches and pains of a sore back. The higher end and longer paddles that come with the pro package offer more power and less fatigue. The Sea Eagle explorer kayaks are fairly wide and the longer paddles are a huge help when paddling this baby. They are not absolutely necessary, but they do make life (in your kayak) easier.

Also if you plan on paddling in open water you will want the directional stabilizer that is on option for this kayak. It is a lot more work to keep the 420x straight without it. It will greatly improve the tracking of your kayak and allow for a much more enjoyable experience.

Please read the longer detailed review for the Sea Eagle 340x as they are virtually the same boat, they simply differ in size.

Final Thoughts On the Sea Eagle 420X

Here’s the run down… If you plan on mostly paddling solo or in whitewater then the SE 340X is probably best. If you plan on paddling in all types of water but with two people then go for the SE 380X which offers much more room and will be more comfortable. If you plan on paddling with your family, dogs, and tons of gear… then the SE 420X will be your best bet. The 420X is the grand daddy of explorer kayaks. It can hold a wopping 850 pounds with absolutely no problem. This kayak is rugged and extremely stable. It is great for all types of excursions including camping, fishing, exploring and traveling.

    Dear Allison,

Thank you so much for your AMAZINGLY PROMPT reply to my question regarding the most comfortable seats to purchase for the 380x/420x!! Maybe you can help me with another question. Your review of the 420x indicates that it can accommodate “2+” paddlers. My question is, what kind of seat would be best for the third paddler (let’s assume an adult) and where would it go? From studying pictures of the 420x, it does not appear to me that the 6 “D rings” are positioned so as to accommodate a third non-inflatable “Tall Back” seat (the most comfy ones). That would seem to leave two options: either the (also comfy) “Deluxe Inflatable Seat” (which would not be able to be secured to any D rings but maybe it wouldn’t matter), or the “SEC Canoe Seat” that Sea Eagle sells. In your opinion, which of these would be the better choice and where would be the best place for it in the 420x? In the bow, in front of the two other paddlers? Many thanks, once again, for your guidance!!

      Hi Kevin,

You can definitely add a third seat to the 420x. You simply have to purchase some extra d-rings and glue them on. Sea Eagle sells them with the glue (look in Accessories under Parts on the Sea Eagle website) and it is really simple to do… in fact they provide instructions for it. Either the tall back seat or the inflatable seat would work fine, so it is simply a matter of personal choice. The extra seat will likely work best up front, I would suggest simply to keep in mind that you want to try and keep the weight distribution even or at least to have the two heavier people up front and in back. The extra seat can also be added to the 380x but of course there would be less room for everyone.

      Cheers, Allison

I purchased a 420x recently and have designed and installed a stern seat/transom which will accomodate a gas 2.5hp easily. First sea trial was in my swimming pool to break in the new OB motor. If anyone is interested in knowing more,
