NRS Pilot Water Shoe

July 13, 2009 by IK World

Water shoes are not always necessary while kayaking but are extremely handy and useful to have.  Without question, your feet will get wet while kayaking… whether from the water in your kayak or just from having to step in and out of the water.

Whitewater kayakers will definitely want a water shoe but if you are doing recreational flatwater kayaking you can get away with just a good pair of sports sandals (that can go in the water).  However I have found that even with recreational kayaking I prefer to wear water shoes.

Advantages to wearing water shoes:

  • Your toes are protected from sharp edges and rocks.
  • Less chance of slipping and falling as they have great traction.
  • Can add warmth if paddling in cooler weather or cold water.
  • They are extremely comfortable.

The NRS Pilot water shoe can be worn by both men and women.  They are lot tops so are great for warmer weather and have heel and ankle straps that hold them securely to your feet.  They have a high-traction sole with sticky rubber pads (no slipping with these on) and paddle insole for extra comfort.  If you also want to wear them in cold weather you can always add a hydroskin sock for increased insulation.
