Stand Up Paddle Board Test Drive Interrupted by Storm
July 26, 2009 by Allison
I saw people using a stand up paddle board or SUP (for short)for the first time in Hawaii. I was hooked the second I saw it. I knew I would love this sport. I am not a surfer. To be honest the thought of surfing and being plummeted under water scares me to death.
Needless to say I didn’t seem to be born with any daredevil genes. However to use a stand up paddle board… to paddle in the ocean or along a river or lake looked and seemed thrilling. The benefits of doing a core exercise like this are numerous and it looked to be a lot of fun.
A good friend of mine recently ordered the inflatable longboard from Sea Eagle. As I have been dying to try the Sea Eagle longboard myself, I headed over as soon as it arrived to take it out for a test spin. I arrived prepared and excited. The sun was blaring, it was hot and gorgeous… a perfect day to be out on the water.
Within 5 minutes of arriving at my friend’s house, the biggest thunder and lightening storm blew in from nowhere. Living in the beautiful and sunny Okanagan, we can get thunder and lightening on occasion as it can be extremely hot and dry.
However rain here is a rarity. On this particular day it poured. In fact I have to say that it rained harder than I have ever seen here.
Decked out in my bathing suit with my camera in hand, I was utterly disappointed. Not wanting to leave empty handed however, I braved the storm, inflated the longboard and took a ton of pictures… in the front yard under a covered roof.
Using the Sea Eagle foot pump that came with the longboard, I inflated the paddle board in 3 minutes flat. Then another 30 seconds to inflate the seat. I was impressed. The longboard looked bigger than I expected. I knew it was 11 feet long and 30 inches wide, but to actually see it in person, it looked and felt very rigid and stable.
I am dying to take it out on the water and test out my stand up paddling skills. For now please enjoy the pictures I took. They are all posted on my Sea Eagle Longboard review.
